Senator: New Mexico’s Energy Transition Act Will “Kill More Jobs” Than Anything Else December 18, 2019 The more New Mexico’s elected leaders learn about the controversial Energy Transition Act, the more the anxiety grows about the impact ahead. The Energy Transition Act, or ETA, was rushed through the Legislature and signed into law earlier this year with green groups having insider access. Now less than a year later, elected leaders who supported and opposed the law are raising questions. Senator George Munoz, a Democrat from Gallup voted against the ETA and his reason is clear: “Believe it or not the Energy Transition Act will probably kill more jobs in the State of New Mexico than anything else.” However, Senator Munoz wasn’t alone in his concerns. Democratic Senator John Sapien, who voted in favor of the ETA, raised concerns about the subsidies and availability of free electricity for vehicles and the economic impact when the real cost is calculated. “I’m sure there’s a few conservation people sitting out there saying ‘Sapien’s gone crazy.’ No, Sapien’s got realistic,” he told the hearing. “In the 50-50 district I represent, I have strong oil and gas, and I have strong people for the environment, I’m strong on both. But the realism is: my business brain tells me that we are on a crash course for disaster,” he continued. Both Senators warned New Mexico will need to be cautious over the next couple of years.
