New Mexico’s Senators Need to Withdraw Support of BLM Nominee Stone-Manning

July 21, 2021

As pressure builds to pull the nomination of Tracy Stone-Manning, New Mexico’s two senators have remained quiet.

Since her nomination to lead the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Stone-Manning has faced accusations of lying to Congress and taking part in a dangerous 1989 tree-spiking incident in Idaho. Just last week, 10 senators signed on to a letter asking President Biden to withdraw the nomination. In return, there’s been nothing but silence from Senators Heinrich and Lujan.

At this point, it’s good to know BLM is in charge of over 13 million acres of land in New Mexico. That’s more land than the states of Vermont and New Hampshire…combined. A recent analysis revealed that 57 percent of the US onshore oil production takes place in New Mexico with much of it on federal land.

New Mexico’s Senators should not approve of misleading statements and even worse, dangerous tree-spiking activity that potentially put lives at risk. Senators Heinrich and Lujan have enthusiastically supported every radical nominee put forth by this administration, but they shouldn’t blindly support a nominee who has engaged in truly hateful behavior.
