New Mexico’s Oil Patch Fastest Growing Area in the State August 17, 2021 The census numbers are in, and New Mexico’s oil patch is the place most are choosing to live. From 2010 to 2020 New Mexico witnessed a population growth of 2.8 percent, well below the national average of 7.4 percent. However, two counties in southeastern New Mexico, Eddy and Lea counties each grew much faster than the state or national average. From the Albuquerque Journal: “Likely due in large part to an oil production boom in the Permian Basin, Eddy County grew by 15.8% over the last decade – or 8,485 people – and Lea County wasn’t far behind with a 15% population growth that amounted to 9,728 additional residents.” This growth occurred in the oil patch at the same time 20 of New Mexico’s 33 counties were losing population. It’s clear more people are choosing to move to parts of New Mexico where jobs and opportunity are plentiful. However, given the radical eco-left policies being forced on the state, it’s hard to believe such growth will continue. Back to Blog Posts
