Former Chinese Government Political Prisoner Warns Biden Administration’s Energy Policies Are Empowering Communist China

April 14, 2023

A former political prisoner of China and Tiananmen Square Massacre survivor is warning that the Biden administration’s failed energy policies are “inadvertently selling America’s national security to the Chinese Communist Party.” As the Biden administration blocks American producers from mining and developing rare earth minerals in the United States, “China is using its strategic advantage in rare earth minerals, which are used to produce Electric Vehicle (EV) batteries, as leverage against the United States.”

Jianli Yang writes in The Washington Times,

“As a longtime China analyst and watchdog, I am gravely concerned that electric vehicle manufacturers appear to be inadvertently selling America’s national security to the Chinese Communist Party…

Some carmakers are seeking to work with Chinese electric battery makers to complete the production of their vehicles in the United States. Ford, for example, is working on a billion-dollar deal that includes working with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd., or CATL, a Chinese battery manufacturer, to make batteries for its new cars in the United States. Working with companies like CATL might help these automakers cut costs and even qualify for more subsidies through the Inflation Reduction Act. Still, it will do so while ballooning the CCP’s influence and leverage over the U.S. at the same time.”

To make matters worse, this comes as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced new vehicle emission standards this week that would force EVs to make up at least 54% of new car sales by 2030 and 66% by 2032. As Axios reports, “The Biden administration’s effort to spur domestic battery manufacturing is running into a problem: Some critical raw materials are only found abroad, and China controls much of the supply.” With the Biden administration dictating even more unaffordable EV mandates, the federal government should be working to open up America’s vast supplies of rare earth minerals, not continuing to make us more dependent on China.

“According to a recent Horizon Advisory report, China is using its strategic advantage in rare earth minerals, which are used to produce EV batteries, as leverage against the United States, which the firm warned ‘both implicates and threatens the entire global system.”
