Eco-Extremists Use Sensationalism and False Narratives to Push Their Green Agenda September 9, 2021 The world’s top medical editors called for emergency action in an article this week on climate change with the core argument that global heat deaths for individuals over 65 have increased more than 50%. Unfortunately, they left out the important fact that the global population of people over 65 increased more than 40% in the same time period. Bjorn Lomborg called out the medical editors on Twitter for their erroneous argument. The world’s top medical editors argue for climate action with core argument: Global heat deaths for 65+ increased 50+%But don’t tell you that the number of 65+ has increased almost as muchOopshttps://t.co/2vb1QE7iIS, https://t.co/QzWZiZdmOF, https://t.co/vtxHLpH8Us pic.twitter.com/qA7GVrZriP— Bjorn Lomborg (@BjornLomborg) September 6, 2021 The article, Lomborg said, is now published in 233 medical journals including BMJ, the Lancet, the New England Journal of Medicine, the East African Medical Journal, and the Chinese Science Bulletin to name a few. The widespread false argument was further called out by Lomborg today, as he tweeted the letter he wrote to the medical journal editors to get them to fix their unsound logic. My letter to get medical journal editors to fix their unsound argument (here @richardhorton1):Climate causes 50%⬆️ heat deaths w/oldIgnores 40%⬆️ oldLike claiming Brexit led to better EU health because total deaths dropped 600,000/yr when UK left.https://t.co/8sVUEwK9MP pic.twitter.com/ADCz6MzUjJ— Bjorn Lomborg (@BjornLomborg) September 9, 2021 In the letter, he cites the correct heat deaths rate with the population increase taken into account, “Indeed, the increase in heat mortality rate is much lower at 9.4%.” Not as eye-grabbing as their original argument, so makes sense why the eco-consciously biased medical editors left out that fact. Just doesn’t quite make sense from an ethical standpoint. We reported on a survey earlier this week by journalist and author Michael Shellenberger that found it is actually Democrats who are more likely to fall for misinformation or so-called ‘greenwashing’ online, as opposed to the frequently pushed narrative of Republicans or pro-energy individuals being “climate deniers.” One of the findings called out the false narrative that deaths from natural disasters will rise in the future due to climate change, when in reality there is a long-term trend of declining deaths: And 76 percent of Democrats and 34 percent of Republicans agreed that “Deaths from natural disasters will rise in the future due to climate change.” In reality, neither the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) nor any other reputable scientific body predicts a reversal in the long-term trend of declining deaths, even under high degrees of warming. Environmental activists frequently rely on the sensationalism of fear and misinformation to sell their costly and dangerous agenda. People need and deserve the real facts and data. Spreading false narratives to push your own agenda is unethical, especially when it’s the world’s top medical editors. Back to Blog Posts
