Christmas Wish #9: Leave the Paris Climate Agreement December 27, 2024 During his first term, President Trump made the right decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement on climate change. Unfortunately, soon after taking office, President Biden rejoined the Paris Agreement, sidelining the interests of American energy workers, taxpayers, and households across the country for their own political gain, siding with environmental activists over American energy workers. Here is our next wish: the United States leaving the Paris Climate Agreement again. The Paris Climate Agreement is full of unrealistic goals and overregulation, will never be achieved, and throws the United States under the bus while India and China continue to develop their economies with coal. Marketed as a global solution to climate change, but in reality, the agreement was nothing but eco-left talking points. Imposing significant economic burdens on the U.S. while delivering no environmental benefits. The Paris Agreement Was Costly and Ineffective The Paris Agreement’s regulations would have had devastating economic consequences. Under the commitments made by the Obama administration, the U.S. was on track to lose hundreds of thousands of jobs, particularly in the manufacturing and energy sectors. These regulations were projected to shrink the gross domestic product (GDP) by $2.5 trillion by 2035. The agreement also required countries to periodically increase their commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For the U.S., this meant pursuing an eventual 80% reduction in emissions—a goal that would have crippled the economy. Wasted Taxpayer Money The Paris Agreement included a “Green Climate Fund,” designed to collect $100 billion annually from participating countries to finance climate adaptation and mitigation in developing nations. The Paris Agreement allows for endless economic and regulatory overreach. By withdrawing, President Trump will protect American interests and ensure that the U.S. is not bound to its unrealistic and ineffective goals. Back to Blog Posts
