Chris Wright to Europe: Your Energy Policies Are a Self-Inflicted Wound

The Biden-era fantasy of a rapid, cost-free energy transition is collapsing under its own weight—and Energy Secretary Chris Wright is not holding back. In a recent address at the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship conference in London, Wright called out Europe’s self-destructive energy policies, particularly Net Zero 2050, as a “sinister goal” that delivers only economic pain and no real benefits. In a Daily Signal report, Chris Wright stated:

“If you make energy more expensive and less reliable, as the United Kingdom has done over the last couple of decades, you lower the standard of living of your population, shrink their opportunity set, and you simply export your industry.”

Wright pointed to Germany as a prime example of green energy delusion. The country has spent over half a trillion dollars trying to replace hydrocarbons, yet still relies on them for 74% of its energy. The only thing it accomplished has been less electricity, higher costs, and a crippled industrial sector.

This is the reality of so-called “green energy transitions.” They do not eliminate fossil fuel demand, they just shift production to China, where coal-powered factories churn out solar panels and wind turbines with no environmental safeguards and using slave labor there and across Africa. Meanwhile, European workers and businesses suffer, forced to pay more for unreliable energy while their industries vanish.

“This is lunacy,” Wright declared. “This is impoverishing citizens for the delusion that this is somehow going to make the world a better place.”

Wright’s blunt assessment mirrors what Vice President JD Vance said in his Paris and Munich speeches: Europe’s energy policies have failed, and America won’t follow them down the same disastrous path. With Trump’s leadership and an energy-first agenda, the U.S. is ensuring that common sense—not climate hysteria—guides policy decisions moving forward.
