California Gas Prices Rise After Mandatory Tax

July 5, 2022

On Friday, California’s insanely high gas prices went up even more, and the state government is to thank. Since 2017 Californians have been subjected to a fuel excise tax each year. Even though many legislators tried to suspend the gas tax this year, Democrats let it continue.

The Los Angeles Times reports:

“The Governor and the Legislature could have suspended the state’s gas tax and stopped this,” Assemblyman Vince Fong (R-Bakersfield), vice-chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, said in a statement about the increase. “But by choice, the ruling party in Sacramento is choosing not to do so. The result will be more rising costs on practically everything.”

Many lawmakers in DC tried to convince their home state lawmakers to suspend this ridiculous tax, writing a letter to Governor Newsom (D-CA) asking him to suspend the state gas tax.

“Amidst historic uncertainty in global energy markets and California’s unique vulnerability to supply shocks, California families deserve tax relief that reflects the severity of the economic realities they face,” said the letter, signed by Jay Obernolte, Kevin McCarthy, David Valadao and other GOP leaders.

It is a shame that state leaders have decided to please a few supporters rather than helping the entire state. With the rising cost of travel and groceries, everyone needs any help they can get. Unfortunately, California is showing the rest of the country what happens when you let the eco-left make all the decisions.
