Biden Forced to Rely on New Mexico’s Eco-Left Legislators for Support

June 9, 2021

If President Biden was looking for massive bipartisan support for his energy policy in New Mexico, he’s going to be disappointed.

A group of 24 eco-left legislators, out of 112 legislators total, penned a letter to Biden and Interior Secretary Deb Haaland this week announcing their support for Biden’s “pause and review of federal fossil fuel programs.” No doubt these radical lawmakers are straining hard to show their support for Biden instead of their own constituents but what is noteworthy about the letter is who didn’t sign it. Of the 10 lawmakers who make up the majority and minority party leadership in the New Mexico legislature, only one signed on to Biden’s letter.

Clearly, it speaks to the unpopularity of the Biden energy agenda that they are relying on the most radical eco-left legislators in New Mexico for support. Since the energy industry funds nearly 40 percent of the state’s schools, these legislators need to present an alternative plan for a massive budget cut for the institutions that serve the most vulnerable children in New Mexico.

Until these legislators give up their gas-powered cars and only use 100 percent wind or solar power in their own homes, this letter is nothing more than an exercise in pathetic political hypocrisy.
