New Mexico Governor Signs Off on Higher Gas Prices

Today, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) signed into law new fuel standards that will increase the price of gasoline. By signing the so-called “Clean Transportation Fuel Standards” bill, Governor Lujan Grisham is forcing New Mexico to join only three other states in enacting this expensive standard. There is a reason only three other states have signed this bill into law. It will raise gasoline prices, and New Mexico families will pay the price.

“The bill will increase gas prices by at least 50 cents per gallon, and you can expect similar increases in groceries and supplies and pretty much everything else. This bill will make life more expensive in New Mexico for average consumers — harming the poorest New Mexicans, who will take the biggest hit with the new law.”

According to AAA as of today, the three states with similar fuel standards pay an average of $4.28 for a gallon of gasoline, nearly a dollar more than the national average. In California, families are forced to pay $4.84 per gallon, a whopping $1.74 more than the current average in New Mexico.

“It’s clear that Governor Lujan Grisham took a look at California’s highest gas prices in the nation and decided that’s what she wants for New Mexico’s families,” said Larry Behrens, Communications Director for Power The Future. “As a national leader in oil production, New Mexico’s leaders should do all they can to support our energy industry. Instead, Santa Fe politicians want to copy failed policies that punish families by driving up prices.”
