New House Bill Frees States from California’s Electric Vehicle Mandates

March 9, 2023

Yesterday, four House Republicans introduced legislation blocking California’s ability to force the purchase of electric vehicles onto American families. The legislation will also save 17 other states from an unrealistic electric vehicle mandate.

Fox News reports,

“The four Republicans, led by Rep. Bob Latta of Ohio, said the bill — the Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act — is designed to protect American consumers’ freedom of choice and block stringent purchase requirements that would lead to higher costs. The legislation comes months after California, which leads the country in annual car sales, approved regulations mandating that all car purchases are “zero emissions” by 2035.”

Additionally, Rep. Jay Obernolte (R-CA), Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) and Rep. John Joyce (R-PA) also sponsored the legislation. Currently, the federal government allows California to set its own emissions standards, and 17 other states are required to follow. The Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act stipulates that states are not required to follow the California mandate that bans the sale of traditional gas-powered cars by 2035.

Power The Future Founder Daniel Turner applauds the new legislation,

“As the poster child for energy failure, California should be the last state setting a roadmap for others. Even green lunatics knew Congress would never pass laws this insane, and that’s why they granted the power to the Golden State. If EVs are as great as Gavin Newsom claims, government mandates would not be necessary. Americans should be able to buy whatever vehicle they want, when they want, and we applaud these members of the House of Representatives for taking this important step.”

This new legislation is the second bill introduced that supports Power The Future’s Congressional Roadmap for Energy Independence. Previously, a bill was introduced to repeal President Biden’s tax on natural gas.
