New Mexico Senate Bill Would Use Tax Dollars for Electric Bikes February 9, 2023 This week Senate Bill 343 was introduced in the New Mexico state legislature. The bill would take $6 million in tax dollars and provide a $1,200 rebate for a new electric bike and helmet. One of the sponsors of the bill has tried to ban fracking in the past. An industry that provides New Mexico with around $2 billion in direct revenue each year. “It’s incredible to witness one of the same legislators who sponsored a ban on fracking now trying to use money from the energy industry to give away millions for e-bikes,” said Larry Behrens, Communications Director for Power The Future. “With 23 percent of New Mexico homes unable to pay their energy bills this year, it’s bewildering to see these legislators focus on a taxpayer giveaway.” At a time when families across New Mexico and the country are struggling with record-high electric bills, it is ridiculous to use tax revenue to incentivize citizens to purchase unreliable modes of transportation. Especially when one senator recently tried to put a stop to the very industry that is making these rebates possible. Unfortunately, the hypocrisy of the eco-left will never end.
