Interior Nominee Deb Haaland Claims She’ll Strike “the Right Balance” If Confirmed. Psht. February 23, 2021 Today, Biden’s Interior Secretary nominee Congresswoman Deb Haaland has her Senate confirmation hearing. The Associated Press reports: In testimony before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Haaland said in her opening statement that she’s committed to striking “the right balance” if confirmed as interior secretary as the department faces support for the use of oil and natural gas while trying to tackle climate change and conserve public lands. Committee Chairman Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who is up for re-election next year, asked whether Haaland supports energy independence and what role fossil fuels might play in that effort. “We absolutely need energy independence and I believe President Biden agrees with that statement as well. I know that we want to move forward with some clean energy, we want to get to net-zero,” Haaland said. Haaland is an outspoken climate activist who constantly attacks the energy industry. She is a supporter of the Green New Deal and has backed Biden’s overreaching executive orders that have already wreaked havoc across the oil and gas industry. It is detached from the reality of the situation for Haaland to state we need energy independence, and that President Biden agrees. If they believed in energy independence why have we further put our reliance on renewable energy, where the majority of the minerals needed for those energy sources are overseas? The list of Senators opposing her nomination for Secretary of Interior has kept growing leading up to her hearing. Montana Senator Steve Daines was the first to say he will block her nomination. Senators Cynthia Lummis and John Barrasso of Wyoming also will likely oppose the nomination. Democratic Senator Joe Manchin’s spokeswoman told NBC Monday, the Senator is undecided on whether to support her nomination. With his seat up for re-election next year in energy-rich West Virginia it will be interesting to see if he aligns with the interests of his constituents or the eco-left’s radical green agenda.
