Election Year Deja Vu: Biden Considers Draining the SPR Again

June 18, 2024

The American people may feel as if they are experiencing déjà vu. We sure do. Once again, the Biden administration shows little concern for our energy and national security and is considering tapping into our Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). But once again, we see this for what it is: a political ploy to try to lower gas prices and boost his poll numbers.

The Washington Examiner reports,

“President Joe Biden is prepared to release more oil from the country’s strategic reserves if gas prices increase during the summer. This is the latest plan by the Biden administration to counter higher prices at the pumps and the more expensive prices on various goods due to inflation.”

When Biden took office, the SPR level was at over 638 million barrels; today, that level is at 370 million, the biggest drawdowns taking place in the lead-up to the 2022 midterm elections.

“As Joe Biden takes our strategic petroleum reserve numbers as low as his polling numbers, America’s security and stability is weakened in the process,” said Daniel Turner, Founder and Executive Director for Power The Future. “Congress needs to put a stop to Biden’s draining of the SPR because the SPR is critical to our nation during emergencies and shouldn’t be used as Biden’s political campaign bailout.”

American families will continue to suffer from high energy prices if the Biden/Harris administration continues their assault on our SPR and energy sector. This administration needs to realize that releasing more of our strategic reserves will not fix the problem; it will eventually create a much bigger one.
