Months After Gov. Lujan Grisham Cheered Expensive Gas Standard, Fuel Prices Hit Record Highs in New Mexico

Fresh off the unofficial start of Summer, New Mexico’s families are once again facing the highest price for gasoline ever recorded in the state. The latest record also occurs less than four months since Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham “cheered” the passage of her mandated fuel standard which would have raised the cost of fuel by 35 cents per gallon.

The potential disaster of the Governor’s “Clean Fuel” mandate is further highlighted by three other states which have passed similar laws: California, Oregon, and Washington. The average cost for a gallon of gas in those states is $5.62 a gallon, with California’s families paying a whopping $6.24 price today.

“It’s mind-boggling to know Governor Lujan Grisham and her environmental campaign donors pushed extremely hard for this gas price increase just a few months ago,” said Larry Behrens, Communications Director for Power The Future. “Perhaps if the Governor paid her own gasoline prices instead of the taxpayers, she wouldn’t be so quick to try to force more pain at the pump. The Governor, and every legislator who pushed this disastrous proposal, owes working families an apology.”

During the first year of her term, Governor Lujan Grisham also mandated new standards of 52 miles per gallon (MPG) for cars, even though it was later revealed her own vehicle only gets 13 MPG. The Governor’s mandates are only making things worse for struggling New Mexican communities this summer.
