AOC, Sanders Try to Bring Back ‘Green New Deal’ to Cover for Their Failure March 22, 2024 We are having Déjà vu as Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-V.T.) are back at it again, resurrecting the Green New Deal terminology in the form of a housing bill. Fox News reports, “Ocasio-Cortez will announce the “Green New Deal for Housing” alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders I-Vt., who is sponsoring the legislation in the Senate. She says the bill will focus largely on public housing, arguing that private housing is no longer realistic for many Americans. “For a long time, we could pass a tax incentive here or there and say, ‘Hey, we’ve got a great housing policy,’” Ocasio-Cortez told Politico. “And everyday people … were supportive because there was still that dream and that idea that ‘I’m going to be buying a home soon … that’s within the horizon for me.’ Right now, we have an entire generation — that is ascending into becoming the most powerful electorate, the largest electorate — for which that is decades away.” This legislation comes years after AOC and Sanders’s original Green New Deal failed to pass Congress. Conveniently, this new bill is coming during an election year, as both lawmakers have ignored rising inflation for the past four years. Power The Future Founder and Executive Director calls out AOC and Sanders for their hypocrisy, “For years, Bernie Sanders and AOC looked the other way as prices skyrocketed, so now it’s rich to watch two of the biggest proponents of the climate agenda suddenly pretend to care about affordability. These are the same two disingenuous politicians who are happy to take your gas stove or cancel your gas car, so when it comes to caring about family budgets they need to find a new deal for credibility.” Back to Blog Posts
