Energy Hero: West Virginia Coal Miners Who Rescued Stranded Electric Vehicle

December 25, 2022

We always think of coal miners as energy heroes, but five miners from West Virginia deserve an extra shout-out this year. This fall, a couple was traveling from Washington D.C. down to WV in an electric vehicle, when they ran out of power on a haul road for Mettiki Coal.

Since the car could not be towed, five miners took it upon themselves to push the vehicle to a charging station at the coal mine. Creating some of the best photos from 2022, an electric car plugged into a coal mine.

West Virginia State Sen. Randy Smith discussed the incident with Fox News.

“So here are 5 coal miners pushing a battery car to the coal mine to charge up,” wrote Smith, noting that you can see the coal stockpile and loadout in the background…This just shows you coal miners are good people and will go out of their way to help anyone friend or foe,” Smith said. “I’m honestly glad they ended up here where they could get some help because they couldn’t get a tow truck and this is out in the middle of nowhere.

These coal miners went out of their way to help, embodied the holiday spirit, and showed genuine hospitality. For this, the West Virginia coalminers earn a spot on the PTF Energy Hero list.
