Welcome to 2020: Albuquerque is Already Behind on It’s Green Goals

January 9, 2020

Meeting arbitrary renewable standards continues to fail around the world, and Albuquerque is no exception.

When Duke City signed on to Mayor Bloomberg’s American Cities Climate Challenge, they signed on to certain goals with deadlines. However, it looks like Albuquerque’s green dreams are a green mirage.

In a presentation obtained through a public records request, the city outlined one of their goals was to meet 58% of municipal electricity demand by 2020.

We emailed the city to find out if they met the goal. Spoiler: they did not.

Their response? They have installed and planned solar for city buildings that will get them “to about 20 percent.” In case you’re wondering, “about 20 percent” isn’t even half of their 58 percent goal.

Of course, this is the pattern seen everywhere: green goals are never realized but the high prices and lost jobs are all too real.

As for Albuquerque missing their self-established green goal? We’ll wait patiently for the environmental community’s outrage.
