New Mexicans Deserve to Know Where Our Representatives Stand on the Green New Deal

May 1, 2019

With a price tag estimated to be in the “tens of tens of trillions,” there is no doubt the Green New Deal will reach into the pocket of every New Mexican. It is a controversial proposal that would lead to disastrous outcomes in the Land of Enchantment, and New Mexicans deserve to know where our representatives stand.

According to a published report, efforts are underway to bring the Green New Deal to a vote and House Democrats will need to lend their support to move the bill forward.

Interestingly, this is a perfect opportunity for New Mexico’s Congressional Delegation to put their support where their mouth is when it comes to the socialist bill. Each of New Mexico’s representatives serves in the Democratic majority yet only one, Rep. Debra Haaland has signed on to the Green New Deal.

In late March, the Green New Deal was brought up in the Senate where it didn’t receive a single vote. The lack of support included votes of “present” from both New Mexico senators despite urgent calls to act on climate. After years of screaming the issue is critical, New Mexico’s Senators took a partisan vote that drew national rebuke.

Will the members of New Mexico’s House delegation take the same hypocritical stance?

They’re not answering, and the media isn’t asking. It’s well past time for them to weigh in.
